Receipt Data Handling & OCR Processing
Because our service processes financial documents, we adhere to strict transparency standards for Financial Products and Services.
Information We Extract
When you use our "Scan a Receipt" feature, we extract only the following data from the image:
- Business name
- Date
- Line items and amounts
- Tip
- Tax
Purpose of Processing
We process receipt data solely to:
- Facilitate Bill Splitting: Automatically calculate individual shares for your group.
- Expense Tracking: Log costs for your personal or group trip history.
- App Functionality: Improve the accuracy of our OCR machine learning models.
Data Retention & Deletion
- Retention Period: We retain receipt data only as long as necessary to provide the service or for legitimate financial record-keeping (typically the duration of an active group + 30 days).
- Anonymization: Once a "Split" is finalized and the group is closed, we may retain anonymized transaction totals for system performance analysis.
- User Control: You may delete any scanned receipt or its associated data at any time through the "Expense History" tab.
Third-Party Service Providers (OCR)
To provide high-accuracy scanning, we share receipt images with Anthropic for OCR processing. Anthropic is contractually prohibited from using your data for any purpose other than providing the extraction service and must maintain security standards equivalent to our own.
Data Security
We implement administrative and technical safeguards, including end-to-end encryption for receipt uploads, to protect your financial information from unauthorized access.
Information Sharing & Third-Party Service Providers
We do not sell your personal information. We may share your information in the following situations:
- With group members: When you join a group, other members can see your name and the expenses you add.
- With service providers: We work with third-party companies to help us operate the Service (e.g., hosting, payment processing, analytics).
- For legal reasons: We may disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights and safety.
Third-Party Subprocessors
We use the following trusted third-party service providers to deliver and improve our Service:

All third-party providers are contractually obligated to maintain security standards equivalent to our own and are prohibited from using your data for any purpose other than providing services to us.
Data Security & Payment Compliance
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
PCI DSS Compliance: All payment processing is handled by Stripe, a PCI DSS Level 1 certified payment processor. We do not store your full credit card details on our servers. Your payment information is encrypted and transmitted securely to Stripe for processing.
Data Retention
We retain your information as follows:
- Receipt images: 30 days after group closure
- Email addresses: Until you unsubscribe or request account deletion
- Analytics data: 24 months for system performance and improvement purposes
- Account data: As long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service
You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by contacting support@areweeven.com. Account deletion requests are processed within 30 days.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate information
- Request deletion of your information
- Object to processing of your information
- Request a copy of your data in a portable format
Cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies to maintain your session and remember your preferences. You can control cookies through your browser settings.
Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)
We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Our Service is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@areweeven.com, and we will delete such information from our systems.
Email Communications Compliance (CAN-SPAM Act)
All marketing emails sent by Are We Even comply with the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003. When you provide your email address:
- Transactional emails (split receipts, account notifications) are sent automatically based on your use of the Service
- Marketing emails require a separate opt-in via checkbox when you provide your email
- All marketing emails include an unsubscribe link in the footer
- Unsubscribe requests are processed within 10 business days
- Our physical mailing address (30 N Gould St Ste N, Sheridan, WY 82801) is included in all email footers
